Pros who say they are taking jobs

"Taking jobs" is the contractor's own update, not a check by us. It does not mean licensed, insured, or verified. Only the Rural Verified badge means we checked. The listings below are made-up examples for the preview.

No example listings in Kansas are set to "Taking jobs now". Search the directory.

After the storm: what to do, in order

  1. Stay safe first. Stay away from downed power lines and report them to your power company. Never run a generator indoors or in a garage (carbon monoxide).
  2. Take photos and video before you clean up. Use our damage checklist.
  3. Call your own insurance agent or company to report the damage. You handle your claim with them. We don't.
  4. Stop more damage if it's safe: tarp a roof, shut off water. Keep every receipt.
  5. Well water: if floodwater reached your well, don't drink the water until it's tested. CDC: testing well water.
  6. Septic: after flooding, use less water until the ground dries. EPA: caring for your septic system.
  7. Federal aid: if FEMA lists help for households in your county, apply at DisasterAssistance.gov. It's free. Farm and ranch land may qualify for USDA's Emergency Conservation Program. See disaster help programs.
  8. Hire carefully. Get two or three written quotes, check the license, and watch for the warning signs below.

Storm-chaser warning signs

From the Federal Trade Commission:

  • They say they don't need a license for the work.
  • They offer a discount only if you sign right away.
  • They ask you to sign over your insurance check.
  • They want all the money up front, or cash, wire, gift card, payment app, or crypto.
  • They ask you to sign a blank contract.
  • They push a lender they know.
  • They offer to help you qualify for FEMA aid for a fee. FEMA doesn't charge to apply.

Do instead: check the license with your state or county, get more than one written estimate, pay by check or card, and don't make the final payment until the work is done. Report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or to your state attorney general.
